Bill S-269, which aims to set national standards for regulating sports betting advertising, is facing a legal deadlock in the House of Commons.

Bill S-269, which proposes a national regulatory system for sports betting advertising in Canada, needs help in the House of Commons. The bill passed the Senate after a lengthy debate but is now stuck in the House of Commons due to a legal dispute between the Liberals and Conservatives over access to documents related to a closed green technology funding agency.

The impasse could prevent the bill from passing its first reading before the Christmas break. Bill S-269, introduced by Senator Marty Deacon, would establish national standards for gambling advertising, such as limiting the number and location of ads and preventing the harmful effects of advertising on minors and vulnerable players. However, given the potential for changes in government after the 2025 election, the bill’s prospects remain uncertain.
