The National Lottery Fund is investing millions in preserving religious buildings and public heritage.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund has announced a grant of $1.57m to support eight religious buildings in the UK. The money will go towards architectural conservation and community engagement initiatives.

Two churches in Newcastle-upon-Tyne have received £163,600 for the Discover Jesmond 1888 project. It will bring together the United Reformed Church and St George’s Church through a historic trail and programme of events.

St Martin’s Church in Bulmer has received £248,504 to improve the energy efficiency of its 14th-century tower and improve community access. St Basil and St Paisios Greek Orthodox Church in Lincoln has received £51,763 for urgent structural surveys of the Grade II listed building.

Funding has also been allocated to develop projects at other churches, including in Helmsley, Holborn and Renfrewshire. In total, the organization plans to invest around £100 million in the preservation of religious buildings over three years.
