Ireland's New Gambling Authority to Launch by Mid-2025
Ireland is set to launch its new Gambling Regulatory Authority in phases by mid-2025, following the recent enactment of the Gambling Regulation Act. This landmark legislation fundamentally restructures the licensing system and establishes a dedicated regulatory body to oversee the country’s betting businesses.
Before the authority can commence operations, several crucial milestones must be achieved, including the appointment of seven board members. The recruitment process will soon begin, with candidates selected by the Minister for Justice.
The initial focus of the new authority will be on implementing a comprehensive national licensing framework, making it mandatory for all gambling operators in Ireland to obtain a license. Operating without one will now be considered a criminal offense, marking a shift towards stricter regulation.
Additionally, the authority will create a national self-exclusion register, allowing individuals to exclude themselves from all licensed operators, addressing a significant gap in the current system. With a budget of €9.1 million allocated for 2024, the authority aims to support responsible gambling.
