Canada Can Learn Sports Betting Ad Regulations from Abroad
Canadian lawmakers are learning important lessons from other countries regarding the regulation of sports betting advertising. Bill S-269, which would create a national system to regulate sports betting advertising, was discussed at a meeting of the Senate Committee on Transportation and Communications.
One of the key witnesses was Michael Grade, known as Lord Grade of Yarmouth, who shared the UK experience. He stressed the need to follow lessons learned abroad to avoid social and economic problems caused by gambling advertising. In particular, he noted that advertising significantly affects the development of addiction.
Bill S-269, sponsored by Senator Marty Deacon, proposes to limit the number of advertisements and ban the use of celebrities in promotional campaigns. Although the bill may not become law, its discussion indicates the continued interest of Canadian lawmakers in this issue.
