New research from the Gambling Commission has found a rise in problem gambling among young people and the need for more oversight.

In 2024, the Gambling Commission published a report into young people’s engagement with gambling, based on a survey of schoolchildren aged 11 to 17.

The study found that 27% of young people had spent their own money on gambling in the last year, similar to previous years (31% in 2022 and 26% in 2023). The most common types of gambling were arcade machines (20%), betting among friends and family (11%) and card games for money (5%).

The number of young people experiencing problem gambling also increased, from 0.7% in 2023 to 1.5% in 2024. While the proportion of young people participating in regulated gambling is 21%, many are not engaging with age restrictions. Tim Miller, chief executive of the Gambling Commission, stressed the importance of supporting parents, schools and communities in reducing gambling harm.
