Mexico: Between Prohibition and the Need for New Gambling Laws
In 2024, hopes for reform of the gambling law in Mexico were revived. President Claudia Sheinbaum and the new head of the Ministry of the Interior, Rosa Isela Rodriguez, have promised to fight corruption in the sector. At the same time, the statements of government representatives leave many questions: will a legislative framework be created that meets modern realities, or will it once again be limited to loud promises?
Currently, Mexico's gambling industry operates in legal chaos, which leads to job losses, taxes, and increased corruption. In addition, the problem of legalizing the import of slot machines and access to the Ministry's database, which is often inaccessible or outdated, remains unresolved.
The sector, which supports a large part of the Mexican economy, needs transparent rules. Will the new leaders be able to reform the law to avoid billions in losses?
