RETAbet Plans Portugal Launch After Securing Licence

RETAbet is preparing to enter Portugal after receiving a licence from the country’s gambling regulator, SRIJ.

The Spain-based operator will launch its sportsbook and online casino through retabet.pt. Portugal will become its third market after Spain and Peru.

RETAbet has operated retail betting shops in Spain since 2008 and launched online services in 2012. The company has also been active in Peru for five years.

Xabier Rodriguez-Maribona explained:

At RETAbet, we prioritise profitable growth. This is not something we say to excuse poor expansion results; it is a guiding principle for our company.

The CEO described Portugal as a natural next step because of its location and growth potential. The country’s online gambling revenue reached €323.7 million in the first quarter of 2026, up 13.7% year over year.

RETAbet now plans to build its position in Portugal while continuing to grow in Spain and Peru.

Rodriguez-Maribona also criticised tighter gambling advertising rules in Spain. He argued that heavy restrictions can make it harder for players to tell licensed operators apart from illegal platforms.

Xabier Rodriguez-Maribona added:

Banning advertising and sponsorship is a mistake.

The company said it will continue reviewing other markets, but Portugal remains its main expansion focus for now.
