Germany Allows Higher Stakes
Licensed German online slot operators can now apply to offer stakes of up to €3 or €5 per spin under new player protection conditions.

Germany’s Joint Gambling Authority of the Federal States has introduced a process allowing licensed online slot operators to offer higher stake limits.

The standard maximum remains €1 per spin. However, operators can now apply for permission to increase the limit to €3 or €5 for eligible players.

Players must be at least 21 years old to access the €3 stake limit. The €5 limit is available only to players who have shown no signs of problematic gambling behaviour during the previous 90 days.

Operators must monitor players before and after increasing their limits. If harmful gambling patterns appear, companies may contact the player, restrict their activity or suspend their account.

The GGL said the change reflects developments in the German gambling market while maintaining the player protection goals of the State Treaty on Gambling. Representatives of all 16 federal states approved the amendment.

Licensed operators welcomed the decision, arguing that strict product limits have made it difficult to compete with illegal gambling sites.

The change comes before the first full review of the State Treaty since it entered into force in 2021. The review is expected to assess whether the rules have successfully directed players towards licensed operators and reduced gambling harm.
