Delays in Alberta's online gaming launch raise concerns as stakeholders seek clarity on plans.

Alberta will not launch a regulated online gaming and betting market anytime soon as previously planned. Alberta Services and Red Tape Minister Dale Nalley announced at the SBC Canadian Gaming Summit in June the intention to implement an open market model similar to Ontario's.

Nally's spokesman, Brandon Abultaif, confirmed that while the ministry plans to detail its plans for 2025, it needs more time to consult with stakeholders. He noted: "We want our iGaming strategy to be fair and transparent for everyone."

Despite hopes for a launch in 2025, many experts consider this timeline to be unrealistic. Canadian Gaming Association President Paul Burns noted that it is important to consider Ontario's experience, including actively involving local businesses in discussions about iGaming.

Nalley plans to discuss the next steps with operators and suppliers at the G2E conference in Las Vegas on October 9.
