The report points to the particular vulnerability of the Canadian gaming sector

Gambling in Canada is the industry most vulnerable to digital fraud, and the number of such attempts has increased significantly over the past year.

A new report from TransUnion Canada found that the gaming industry, including online sports betting and poker, had the highest rate of suspected fraud attempts in the first half of 2024 at 9.6%. This is slightly more than in retail trade (9.2%) and public services (7.7%).

In a global comparison among 19 markets, the average rate of suspected fraudulent activity in the gaming sector was 7.2%. However, in Canada, this figure increased by 79.3% year-over-year, the second largest increase among Canadian industries.
